What does it take to play golf? Rackets, balls, feeling and good nerves – and very important: a massage gun!
This is what our guest author Eduard Freundlinger , author of numerous novels, including the satirical bestseller, claims.
The coronator and constant contender for victory on the PGA European Tour… (with the Playstation).
In this post you will find out:
• Why a massage gun belongs in your golf bag
• 5 areas of application for a massage gun
• The product with the best price-performance ratio
• 7 professional tips for safe use
I have lived in southern Spain, on the so-called “Costa del Golf”, for almost 30 years. Since my father gave me his first set of equipment just as long ago, every fall when my father comes to visit me in Spain, I play a round of golf with him.
My record from 3 decades of golf: 30 rounds, 30 defeats, 2 birdies – although in one case my father rightly claimed that I cheated because I kicked the ball that had come to rest behind a tree onto the fairway in an unobserved moment.
In my defense, I should mention that my father has a handicap of 11 and I have two handicaps in golf: lack of skill and back pain. The back pain usually only occurs when I’m golfing because I’m too tense in my swings.
That’s why I prefer to play this sport on the Playstation, where I consider myself one of the pros. Recently my father came to visit me again in my adopted home and we repeated our annual “offline golf ritual” at the Santa Clara golf course near Granada.
The first few holes went well and I was almost level with my father. But on the next par 3 I had two options: play the ball directly into the hole and celebrate the first hole-in-one of my golf career, or sink it into an idyllic pond that was very close to the green. I was proud to have hit the middle of it – the water.
Having fallen further behind due to the penalty, all my looseness was gone and I tensed up. When I teeed off on the 7th hole, I swung the Big Bertha like Tiger Woods on Extasy. Then a thick lump of earth flew towards the women’s tee and the ball rolled behind my golf bag as if it was trying to hide from an assassin. All I could do was walk to the clubhouse, stiff as if I had swallowed a pitching wedge.
At home my back pain was almost unbearable. But luckily I bought a massage gun for exactly this reason…
With the Orthogun, which weighs just 828 grams, self-massage is easy –
but it’s much more fun with two people. You can find instructions for partner massage here .
A few intensive back massages made it possible for me to return to the golf course with my dad just a few days later and celebrate my third birdie there – relaxed, pain-free and without cheating.
Although I lost again to my father, my handicap improved from 2 to 1: the back problems were gone, and so the only remaining handicap was a lack of skill.
I may not be a champion on the golf course, but I am a professional at using a massage gun. Below I will tell you five areas of application and my reasons why I chose a device from the Berlin company Orthomechanics, as well as my seven professional tips for safe use.
5 areas of application for a massage gun
Before sports
Gently massaging warms and loosens your muscles and protects you from injuries caused by a cold start in golf or other sports.
During the round
If tension occurs during a longer round, such as in the shoulder or upper back area, you can relax this with a short break. This means you can swing relaxed even during the last few holes.
After the round of golf
Using a massage gun makes sense for up to 24 hours afterwards as it helps you loosen your muscles and remove the lactate. This prevents muscle soreness and accelerates regeneration. A massage gun also works wonders for cramps or strains.
When stressed
Stress pulls down the neck and shoulder muscles, resulting in poor posture and limited range of motion. Shock wave therapy is ideal for loosening muscles and relaxing the body.
In case of pain
“A massage gun can be used to help with pain caused by tense or cramped muscles. This allows you to achieve good results by loosening and releasing tension. It is important to only massage the muscles around the pain area,” says physiotherapist Volker Auler.
Thanks to the OrthoGun, no more neck pain in the home office
The massage gun with the best price-performance ratio
For me personally, the term “miracle weapon” is not too exaggerated when it comes to a massage gun. I had been suffering from back problems for a long time until a friend advised me to buy a massage gun, of which there is now a larger selection than golf clubs.
During my research, I came across the OrthoGun model from the Berlin company Orthomechanics in a test winner report. On their website I read the experience of a student who used it to get her chronic back pain under control.
This massage gun is even used by professional athletes and Olympians and if a double medalist is convinced by the device, then she will cure my tension too, I thought to myself.

So acquire good knowledge of how to use the massage gun correctly and, above all, safely. You can get sufficient information about this through tutorials on the Internet, from a physiotherapist, a sports doctor, or directly from the manufacturer.
Please note: A massage gun like the OrthoGun can help, but you should also consider other treatments and don’t forget about muscle strengthening and mobility. If you suffer from chronic pain, or if you experience severe, persistent pain during or after treatment, consult your doctor or physio immediately.
